Buildings in New York City at Risk of Flood Threat Due to Gradual Subsidence

The cause is that there are over a million buildings that weigh more than 1.7 trillion pounds. For example, The Empire State, one of the best-known buildings in the city, weighs 365,000 tons.

“The settlements are not all even. The settlements occur on one side and on the other, it is not that everything goes down at the same time” explains the engineer Darlys Arcía.

This gradual subsidence coupled with the rise in sea level due to the melting of glaciers increases the threat of flooding. The water flanking New York City has risen about 9 inches (22 centimeters) since 1950.

The study authors state that buildings can suffer serious damage from repeated exposure to seawater. This is why, after the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, plans have been created to protect the coasts with boardwalks and an extension of the coastline.

“The boardwalks are places where people go to see the sea up close, but those boardwalks in different cities when hurricanes or storms come, people have to move away from those areas because the hurricane does not ask for permission to pass,” says Arcía.

Expert David Calderón explains that 10,000 to 30,000 pounds of snow, depending on the size of the property, would be enough to damage the roof of your home. In addition, he clarifies that houses with flat roofs are the ones that accumulate the most snow, so they are at greater risk. To avoid collapses, it is necessary to check the state of your roof and be attentive to signs such as ice inside the house.
