The Gaggiolo customs office on the border with Switzerland was evacuated on Friday afternoon due to a bomb scare. It was necessary to carry out checks to understand whether explosives were present on board an SUV that was passing through customs past 4 pm. The border, guarded by the financial police, remained closed both on entry into Italy and on exit for about three hours starting at 4 pm The bomb squad were called to the scene and the entire area was closed off to traffic, blocked at a distance of about 500 meters. According to what has been learned a person on board a vehicle presented himself at customs leaving Italy and warned the military of the presence of explosives on the car. The financiers immediately circumscribed the area and interrupted the passage of private and commercial transit. The alarm eventually proved unjustified and the protagonist of the episode – a 40-year-old offender from Malnate (Varese) – detained by the police.

After the inspection of the bomb squad who also used canine units it was verified that there were no explosives on the vehicle and the crossing was reopened for transit in both directions around 18.30.
