Building kit for adults: Get a rare classic Ferrari for fun on long evenings

In the 1950s it was the admired pride of Enzo Ferrari’s factory. With the legendary Ferrari 250, the great success of the Italian car manufacturer on the world’s roads and in motorsport began, and the factory developed many derivatives, which today are among the most sought-after and most expensive classic cars of all time. Be it the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO, 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso, 250 GT Berlinetta “Tour de France” or the 250 GT California Spyder.

Fulfilling your dream and parking the iconic Ferrari 250 series in your garage is an extremely expensive pleasure these days. But there is still hope that you can fulfill it at an affordable price. If you don’t care about high-end options, are technically skilled, and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty, your hopes are all the better. The most recent perfect opportunity was a recent UK auction by Collecting Cars, where one of the iconic ‘250s’ came up for sale in extraordinary condition.

Just imagine those evenings when you are locked in the garage and put together one of the most beautiful Italian GTs of all time

It is a classic Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2, the first four-seater Ferrari produced in a larger series. The Italian brand started producing it at the end of the fifties and by 1963 managed to produce almost a thousand pieces. Even thanks to this model, the factory had enough money to continue with a large racing effort in the sixties. It is not one of the rarest “twenties and fifties”, but does it matter if you come across them today especially at prestigious vintage shows? It was an even more interesting offer because you could imprint a piece of yourself on your new car.

Ferrari 250 GT/E

The Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2 was the first four-seater luxury coupe from Maranello to be produced in large numbers. Between 1959 and 1963, 957 examples were produced, most of which have not survived to this day. One of the main reasons is the fact that restorers and modders used them as the basis for conversions and replicas of rarer variants of this important Ferrari, which made the Italian factory a lot of money racing all over the world.

The Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2 is one of the less famous “twenties and fifties”, but in perfectly restored condition it is the pride of all classic car collections

You must have already noticed that it is not in “sit and drive” condition right now, but it is a unique opportunity for handy DIYers with a love for Italian cars. It is a “left-hand” variant in a state of unfinished full renovation, and according to the attached photos, it looks like it just needs a little finishing and assembly. There are plenty of necessary parts for the Pininfarina stripped body, including the original 240hp 3.0L “Colombo” V12 and four-speed manual.

The twelve-cylinder Colombo does not have the same serial number as in this bodywork from the factory, but it matches the type and performance

Although there are not many authentic period documents for Ferrari, and the serial number of the twelve-cylinder heart does not correspond to a specific body. But these are the little things that make this specimen one of the cheaper ones. Fully certified vintage cars cost significantly more money and the only source of information included is the original Ferrari Classiche certificate. It reveals at least a small part of the history of the car that left the production hall in 1961.

The only information known today says that the first owner of this Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2 was Carlo Del Ventisette, whose family in Italy produced luxury chandeliers and specialized in the antique furniture business. The first owner was at the same time a friend of the famous racer Sir Jackie Stewart, whom he met through a mutual interest in sports shooting. We can only speculate about the story of how the car sold in Italy ended up in England.

Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2s are not among the most valuable cars in the 250 series, but they are few and far between these days and are prized by all Ferrari collectors

Thanks to the white primer, the new owner gets the opportunity to choose how to proceed with the renovation that has already started. The original car left the factory in Blu Scuro blue with the same color on the dashboard. The luxurious interior was complemented by black leather on the seats, a red center console and red carpets. And while thinking about the next step, he has to turn to specialists to help him with a complete renovation of the engine, transmission and electrical installation of the car.

And for what amount was the historic Ferrari 250 GT/E 2+2 finally sold? It’s surprising, but no one has shown such interest that it would be worthwhile for today’s owner to send her out into the world. Those interested offered only approximately three million CZK, which is significantly less than the value of this classic Ferrari. Refurbished cars are sold for a price of at least ten million crowns. We believe that the current owner will reconsider the sale, eventually complete it himself and thoroughly enjoy it.
