An apartment building collapsed early Thursday morning north of Miami Beach in the Surfside area, leaving an unknown number of people trapped in the rubble.

In a message on Twitter, Miami-Dade firefighters indicated that more than 80 of their units were in the area of ​​Collins Avenue and 88th Street after “the partial collapse of a building” shortly after 2 a.m.

In the emergency communication services, the Miami Beach firefighters indicated that they were working on the collapse of the building “with multiple patients” and requested the assistance of “all available units.”

Surfside police spokeswoman Marian Cruz told Telemundo 51 that the rear of a 12-story apartment building partially collapsed and that firefighters were conducting rescue work.

It also indicated that other affected residents were transferred to the Surfside Community Center, on Collins Avenue and 93rd Street.
