At least 17 people were killed last night in new attacks on the industrial city of Zaporizhzhya, according to local authorities.

In addition, another 40 were injured in the night’s missile attack, reports CNN and the Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Independent, among others, which refer to statements by the interim mayor of the city, Anatolij Kurtev.

– As a result of overnight missile attacks against Zaporizhzhya, residential buildings and streets in a residential area of the city were destroyed, writes Kurtev on the Telegram messaging service, according to Reuters.

The attack began at 7:00 pm on Saturday evening, local time, and continued throughout the night.

Governor Oleksandr Starukh said Sunday evening that a skyscraper in the city was hit by an attack. Images on social media show an apartment building that suffered extensive damage.

Starukh says Sunday morning that at least six residential blocks were damaged in twelve missile strikes on Sunday night. He further states that the official death toll is now twelve.

– There may be more people under the ruins. A rescue operation is underway, says the governor, who says eight people have been rescued.

On Thursday, a five-story apartment building in the same city was hit by an attack. The death toll has been revised several times, the last time at 17 deaths on the first Sunday night.
