May 1st is Labour Day, a time to celebrate the contributions of workers worldwide. However, after three years of crisis, workers globally have yet to witness the promised renewal of a “better world.” Real wages have fallen, poverty has risen, and inequality remains entrenched. The pandemic has left many businesses unable to cope, with small enterprises being the most affected. Unfortunately, hardworking people feel as though their efforts have gone unrecognized. The lack of opportunities has contributed to widespread mistrust. To build a stable and equitable world, we need a different path prioritizing social justice. First and foremost, our policies must focus on human needs and aspirations, with a human-centered approach. Sustainable Development Goal 8 stresses the importance of “Decent Work for All.” Further, we must reassess the architecture of our social and economic systems, reinvigorating labor organizations and reviewing outdated regulations. A Global Coalition for Social Justice would bring together a broad range of international bodies and stakeholders to prioritize social justice in national, regional, and global policies and actions. We have the opportunity to reshape the world we live in positively. Only by prioritizing social justice can we build equitable and resilient societies and achieve lasting peace.
