Berlin (MH) – The Deutsche Oper Berlin released a new production of Ludwig van Beethoven’s only opera, ‘Fidelio’ on Friday. There were far more boos than good ones from the crowd. The favorite of the audience was the Swedish soprano Ingela Brimberg in the role of Leonore, who also received the only applause from the scene of the first performance. Also applauded for her Jo as Marzelline and Albert Pesendorfer, who took over shortly in the role of Rocco. Robert Watson as Florestan, on the other hand, could not convince either singing or acting.
The creative team led by director David Hermann especially received boos. Many interventions in the plot left the audience perplexed. Why does Leonore shoot one of Florestan’s fellow prisoners in the prison? After finding her husband, does Leonore have nothing to do but wash him? Why can individual prisoners escape again and again in the first act, while the opening of the dungeons is completely absent in the finale? – A visitor said: “It was the first time in my life that I booed after an opera.”
The orchestra, conducted by Director General of Music Sir Donald Runnicles, was sometimes too loud for the singers, but some singers did not keep time. The choir (Jeremy Bines) was able to inspire without reservation.
