Bühl doesn’t have to worry about the royal offspring. The forest of fingers that opens up in front of Alexandra Grasmik hardly allows any other conclusion. The Bühler Plum Queen has just asked who would like to be the Blue Queen one day.
Alexandra I. came to the Balzhofen Fruit and Horticultural Association this afternoon. The association is taking part in the municipal children’s holiday program and has called for people to bake plum cakes.
The holiday programme includes around 100 offers
After a strenuous school year, six uneventful weeks of vacation can feel like an eternity. To prevent this, the city of Bühl organizes the summer vacation program every year for children and young people aged 6 to 16. Between excursions, crafts, handicrafts and baking, there is something for everyone. In cooperation with local companies, clubs and organizations, around 100 different offers are created.
Every two years, the Balzhofen Fruit and Horticultural Association organizes an exciting program for children. They go out into nature to harvest fruit and vegetables. They then use them to make delicious food that the children can take home.
The afternoon with Plum Queen Alexandra I was fully booked after just half an hour. She attaches great importance to introducing children to regional fruit cultivation and making the Bühler early plum tasty for them, also in a figurative sense. That is why she came up with the idea of supporting the Balzhofen association with its summer holiday campaign.
16 children take part in the cake campaign
16 children came to Haus Harmonie. Grasmik explained to them why the Bühler early plum is something special and how it has shaped the region. Not only can the blue superfruit be used to make numerous dishes and luxury items, it is also extremely healthy. Many years ago it was so popular that a separate airport was even built in Bühl to make it easier to transport the plums over long distances. The children also learned about the tradition of the plum festival and the office of the plum queen.
Then it’s off to a short walk to the plum harvest. Each child can fill a basket and take it home later. Back at Haus Harmonie, some of the plums are pitted at three stations, dough and crumbles are made and cake tins are filled. And then it’s time for the cakes: off into the oven.
And the result tastes great to everyone
To avoid boredom while waiting, the children color in mandalas. When the cake is finally ready, everyone is delighted: it tastes great.
Michael Hönig, chairman of the fruit and gardening association, is pleased. It is a lovely tradition to take part in the children’s holiday program and, on top of that, a good opportunity to get involved in the community. The children have great fun every time. This can also be seen in the demand for the program.
Most children are already familiar with Bühler’s “national fruit”
The club’s aim of giving the children a great experience has clearly been achieved. Smiling faces can be seen everywhere. “Perhaps they will remember us in a positive way in the future,” says Hönig, who is pleased to have inspired the participants to join the club. The children are enthusiastic about plums anyway: their families usually have fruit trees at home. So the children are already familiar with Bühler’s national fruit.
Plum Queen Alexandra also draws a positive conclusion. “I am very grateful to the fruit and gardening association that I was able to organize this beautiful day with the children.” In order to introduce even more children to the tradition, she is offering a similar event in cooperation with the Kappelwindeck fruit and gardening association. This is also already fully booked.
