“Bugs in Nexx’s Smart Home Devices Leave Homes and Businesses Vulnerable to Hackers”

Smart home technology has made it easier than ever to control various aspects of our homes remotely. From adjusting the temperature using a phone app to turning off lights with just a voice command, the convenience of smart home devices is undeniable. However, with this convenience comes a potential security risk. Researchers have found that it’s shockingly easy to gain control of someone’s Nexx smart home plugs and garage doors, leaving homeowners vulnerable to unwanted access and potentially dangerous situations. In this article, we’ll explore the potential risks associated with smart home technology and share tips for how you can protect your home and family from these vulnerabilities.

Nexx’s smart home devices have a number of bugs which can be exploited by criminals to open doors, turn off electrical appliances, and disable alarms. Over 40,000 of these devices in homes and businesses are at risk as the manufacturer has failed to address the vulnerabilities. Both Sam Sabetan, who uncovered the flaws, and the US government’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) tried to help fix the issues for three months and after being ignored by Nexx, have now gone public with the details so users can protect themselves. The most severe flaw is a hard-coded credentials issue, meaning hackers can easily access any stranger’s Nexx hardware remotely. Miscreants can use these credentials to access Nexx’s Message Queuing Telemetry Transport server and from there, see all MQTT messages for Nexx’s devices and customers, sending commands to control strangers’ garage doors and power plugs.

In conclusion, the vulnerabilities present in Nexx smart home devices are not to be taken lightly. As we’ve discussed, simple techniques like brute force attacks and sniffing can give attackers access to your home security system. Therefore, it’s essential to take proactive steps to protect your smart home devices by keeping them updated, using strong passwords, and limiting access to your Wi-Fi network. By taking these steps, we can prevent attackers from seizing control of our homes and keeping our families safe. Stay aware, stay vigilant, and stay safe.
