After the open controversy in recent days about the project for a new mobility ordinance for the section dedicated to bicycles, the mayor yesterday denied the accusations made by associations such as Composcleta, of trying to restrict the use of this type of vehicle in the city. town.
In this proposal, which is still in the debate phase, the prohibition of circulating in any type of vehicle through the historic center is included, outside the loading and unloading hours and with the corresponding authorization.
On this aspect, the Councilor for Mobilidade, Gonzalo Muíños, had already recalled that this prohibition is established in the current regulations, and that in any case, in the processing of the ordinance, these types of opinions will be taken into account, and that except for some streets, in which the width of the cyclists will not be allowed, in others the passage will be authorized, although not parking, which must be carried out at the points designed for that purpose, since in trees or street lamps, or in any other element of urban furniture.
Also the mayor, Sánchez Bugallo, wanted to settle the controversy yesterday, ruling out any type of ‘biciphobia’ on the part of the local government. In this sense, he recalled that it was precisely a government chaired by him that launched the public bicycle loan system, “cunhas tarxetas that were practically free”, and that it was in operation until 2011, when it was abolished by another local government, and Currently, he stated that the bikes were “useless or missing”, as were the facilities that housed the systems to hold them, and that at that time they were also removed from the points that were distributed throughout the urban territory. .
For this reason, he pointed out, they are now thinking of starting it up again in the city, for those people who want to use it to move from one point to another. At the time, this measure was justified by the low profitability of the system, since it seems that there were many fewer users.
The controversy came to light a few weeks ago, when the document that was being prepared was leaked, and there was a citizen reaction that had its peak in the celebration of a demonstration with more than two hundred participants that culminated in the Obradoiro.
Carriles. There are also other proposals, such as the one raised by the local president of the Popular Party, Borja Verea, who proposed the fitting out of more than forty-seven kilometers of bike lanes in the city.
At the moment these lanes hardly exist, although in new developments, such as the recently completed one on Clara Campoamor avenue, but their creation in the urban center is complicated by the very appearance of the streets. A more difficult problem to solve in the historic centers, as reflected in the White book on mobility prepared by the World Heritage Cities.
