Since Thursday, the Windows Store has been installing the HP Smart app on their PCs without asking many users. Microsoft is investigating the problem.
It’s raining complaints on online forums such as Reddit that Microsoft has recently installed the HP Smart app unsolicited on Windows 11 and Windows 10 for many users. It is true that the HP Smart app is automatically installed when you connect an HP device, but this is all about people without HP device.
Microsoft is also in the dark and has started an investigation. Several users suspect that the error lies in incorrect labeling of the Microsoft XPS Document Writer, a virtual printer that allows print jobs to be saved as PDF. The specifications suddenly show ‘HP LaserJet M101-M106’ since a potential bug in a Windows update.
That printer may trigger an automatic download of the HP Smart app that has suddenly appeared on many users’ PCs since Thursday.
How to remove?
We of course hope that Microsoft resolves the bug quickly, but it is also important that we emphasize that it is not malicious software. HP Smart is an official program and will not affect the performance or security of your PC.
You can also conveniently delete the app. Click on the Start button, right click on HP Smart and choose To delete. After that, the app disappears and it is not automatically offered again within the Windows Store for reinstallation. Is HP Smart not in the list of recently added applications? Then the app has probably been on your PC for some time. You can still remove it by searching for HP Smart in the search bar and following the steps above.
