After the suspensions of Cristante and Lazzari for balsphemous remarks on the Serie A pitches, it is the turn of Gianluigi Buffon to be sanctioned. The Juventus goalkeeper is fined 5,000 euros.
The sanction has fallen. The Italian National Federal Court sentenced Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon to a fine of 5,000 euros. The Turin doorman is condemned for blasphemy, after having uttered a controversial sentence during the meeting against Parma on December 1. The Italian narrowly avoids the suspension.
The seasoned 42-year-old has been harshly harangued his team-mate Manolo Portanova in Juventus’ 4-0 win over Parma. The incident was picked up by radio recording and was seen as a lack of respect to God or the sacred.
Bryan Cristante and Bryan Cristante suspended for blasphemy
This is not a first for Gianluigi Buffon, who had previously been convicted of “blasphemous expression”. The former PSG goalkeeper had already in the past been forced to apologize for saying the word “Dio” (God), although he claimed to have said “zio” (uncle). Blasphemy appears in the code of Italian sports justice. Since 2010 in Italy, several sanctions have been taken against players or coaches who have made comments considered to be a lack of respect for God or the sacred.
Serie A is particularly uncompromising with blasphemous behavior since the start of the season. Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante and Lazio player Manuel Lazzari were suspended for blasphemous remarks in the matches against Bologna and Inter respectively.
