The city of Buenos Aires will host a final of the Libertadores Cup of football for the twenty-first time, after it became official this Tuesday that it will host the 2024 edition.
“It’s official: Buenos Aires will host the final of the Copa @Libertadores 2024. What a joy to welcome you in our country @CONMEBOL!”published the official account of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on the social network X.
Since 2019, the year in which the title of the highest club competition in South America is played in a single match, Argentina has not hosted a final.
The last Libertadores decision that must be traced back to on Buenos Aires soil is the failed one in 2018 involving the eternal rivals, River Plate and Boca Juniors, and whose return had to be resolved in Madrid.
That was an unforgettable final, because it was the first that pitted two teams from the rivalry of millionaires and xeneizes and because of how the events developed: the first leg had to be played one day later than planned due to flooding at the La Bombonera facilities, Boca Juniors field, and the return move moved to Europe after River fans attacked the Auriazules vehicle near the Núñez stadium.
Monumental Stadium
Since then, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) awarded the organization of the Libertadores final to Lima, Rio de Janeiro (twice), Montevideo and Guayaquil (Ecuador).
The name of the stadium that will host has not yet been announced, although Everything seems to indicate that it will be the Monumental Stadium, River Plate’s stadium, capable of hosting more than 85,000 spectators. after its last remodeling.
Although the possibility of Buenos Aires being the venue in 2024 has long been rumored, this Tuesday the news was confirmed and the Argentine capital will once again experience the final stage of a tournament that it has already enjoyed on numerous occasions.
Except in 1962, when it hosted the playoff match (after the home and away games in their respective stadiums) between the Brazilian Santos and the Uruguayan Peñarol, the other 19 finals played in Buenos Aires involved local teams.
Eleven of them featured Boca Juniors, six featured River Plate (in this case, one is repeated because both played it) and one was Argentinos Juniors, Vélez Sarsfield and San Lorenzo.
Argentina
The decisive experience of the continental title is extended to the rest of Argentina, by including the ‘King of Cups’, Independiente de Avellaneda – top champion of the Libertadores since 1984, with 7 titles -, Racing Club (also from Avellaneda), Estudiantes ( La Plata), Newell’s Old Boys (Rosario) and Lanús (from that homonymous town in the province of Buenos Aires).
With 25 titles, Argentina is the country that has won the title the most times, followed by Brazil (23) and Uruguay (8). EFE
