Buenos Aires tightens quarantine in July

The Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) will return to the strictest quarantine phase between July 1 and 17. The announcement was made this Friday by President Alberto Fernández along with the heads of the province of Buenos Aires and the federal capital, given the worrying increase in infections in the area. Of the total of 52,457 cases in the country, 90% are concentrated in the AMBA.

The so-called “action plan” contemplates that from Wednesday only the 24 essential items that were enabled from the first day of quarantine on March 20 will be allowed to work, and not those that were added later. Thus, people are asked to only leave their homes to do “the essential”. In the city of Buenos Aires, the sports activity enabled a few weeks ago will be suspended. However, the recreational outings of the children will continue in force during the weekend.

“I ask everyone to stay home,” Fernández pleaded in his announcement. The governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, added: “If we had followed the path of Brazil or Chile, although the comparisons are odious, today in Argentina we would have between 250,000 and 600,000 infections.”

Fernández claimed to “understand” the fatigue and burden of people due to quarantine, but noted that “we are fighting together (…). I ask you to understand and I ask you to help us. ”
