Rishil and his family’s new home is in the middle of Kozhikode. The first challenge was the L-shaped 5.5 cent plot. Apart from the road, only four and a half cents was left for the house. The householders had the idea of a budget-friendly house that would make maintenance easy considering their living conditions.
The roof is GI trussed and old roof is laid to suit the tropical climate of Kerala. The spaces in the house are aligned towards the back according to the length of the plot. Cut stone cladding beautifies the front walls of the house. There is also the option of adding rooms upstairs if needed in the future.
Porch, sitting room, formal living, family living, dining, kitchen and three bedrooms are covered in 1450 square feet. Interiors are designed on an open policy to ensure maximum spaciousness in a small space.
Formal living has been repositioned for privacy upon entering. The family living-dining-kitchen is part of the open hall. Double-height ceilings and white walls help make spaces feel larger.
An open layout was created to interact with the common areas of the house. Breakfast counter provided at entry. Also has Varkeria as a supplement.
Stair design minimizes dead space. Stairs are laid with acacia plank on steel frame.
The bedrooms are simple and beautiful. The storage arrangement on the headside wall is also different. There are windows to let in light and air.
An attempt has been made here to provide maximum space utilization with less square feet. The beauty of the design is that when you enter the house, you will not feel that it is only 1450 square feet.
