Ferencváros Budapest footballers lost 0:3 at home to the champion of the Faroe Islands KI Klaksvík in the rematch of the 1st qualifying round of the Champions League and were sensationally eliminated after a goalless draw in the first match.
The Faroes are ranked 302nd in the UEFA club rankings, while Ferencváros are ranked 55th.
Just two hours after the match, club owner Gábor Kubatov announced on social media that Russian coach Stanislav Čerčesov had quit Ferencvárosi.
“The result of my personal discussion with Stanislav Čerčesov is that we no longer work together,” wrote Kubatov.
The Faroese were not scared by the crowd of 18,000 in the Grupama Arena, and the heat didn’t cause them any problems. They played very organized and self-sacrificing in defense and were unexpectedly dangerous in counterattacks and set pieces.
On the contrary, the players of the Hungarian champion kicked mistakes from the beginning, they reacted late in personal fights. Already after the first half, it was a shocking 0:3, but the home team was not overcome even by the deafening squeal of the fans, which escorted them to the locker room.
After the break, the Hungarian supporters believed that Ferencváros could start a quick goal, but it did not come. A quarter of an hour before the end, supporters started packing banners in the stadium, and the core of fans in the B-stand turned their backs to the pitch in protest.
Twenty supporters from the Faroe Islands in the VIP sector celebrated as if their team had won the Champions League.
