BORA Hansgrohe rider Emanuel Buchmann has not yet set a new record time for the so-called ‘Everest Challenge’. The 27-year-old German’s attempt has been declared invalid for violating the rules.
The goal of the Everest Challenge is to cycle 8,848 vertical meters, the height of Mount Everest, as quickly as possible.
Buchmann, who raised money for charity with his attempt, took the challenge in the Austrian Alps on Friday for 7 hours and 28 minutes.
With that, last year’s Tour de France number four improved the record time of American mountain biker Keegan Swenson by 12 minutes, but according to Hells 500, who checks the attempts for an Everest Challenge, the record can’t officially count.
According to the rules, a rider must always climb the same climb and Buchmann started with a climb on the other side of the mountain. In addition, it is the 7 hours and 28 minutes that the German was in motion, when it comes to the total duration of the attempt. It was 7 hours, 51 minutes and 42 seconds. “A truly fantastic ride, but not a record,” writes Hells 500.
Buchmann said on Friday that the Everest Challenge is one of the toughest things he has ever done. “I didn’t expect it to hurt so much at the end,” he said on his team’s site. “The last 1,000 meters of altitude have been terrible.”
