World, Aug 19, 2024 (ATB Digital).- Jungkook and V, members of the popular South Korean boy band BTS, have filed a civil lawsuit of 90 million won (approximately USD 68 thousand) against the controversial YouTube channel Sojang, due to “damages for defamation and other illegal acts.”
The suit was filed through the band’s label, Big Hit Music, and the first hearing is scheduled for August 23 at the Seoul Western District Court’s 12th Civil Division, five months after the court was first informed in March 2024, according to reports. Star News.
The aforementioned channel Sojang managed to accumulate a large number of views on his videos by spreading sensational information and constantly attacking South Korean celebrities. Despite numerous efforts by fans of the idols affected, no further information is known about the content creator, except that she is a woman named Park Joo-ah, who is around 40 years old.
In June 2023, Big Hit Music revealed in a statement posted on Weverse that a first complaint had been filed against Sojang in 2022 for defamation and obstruction of business, however, the court made the decision to suspend the investigation shortly after.
“We have actively requested the resumption of investigations, attempting to obtain Sojang’s personal information and providing it to the relevant authorities. It has since been resumed,” the post reads.
The company has also emphasized that the initial lawsuit included other suspects besides Sojang, so this process will continue its course focusing on all the people who have violated the rights of BTS artists.
In their statement, Big Hit Music said, “Although it will take some time to punish the suspects, we will take strong legal action until the end.” They added, “Our work will continue.” [mientras los miembros de BTS cumplen su servicio militar obligatorio] and we will take severe measures against the suspects. There will be no leniency or compromise under any circumstances.”
According to the media Star Newsmember V had already personally spoken out to his fans about the matter. After a user posted a screenshot of one of Sojang’s videos on the fan platform Weverse, he wrote, “Oh? I’m going to sue. She’s even bothering my family and friends. Bye.”
V later returned to the platform to express his stance on the matter: “I’ve only skimmed through it, but not just us, but all artists hate people like that. In response to a fan advising him not to bother with malicious posts, V maintained, “Of course, my mental strength is very strong, just like SUGA.”
It is worth mentioning that Sojang (aka Park) has also been accused of defaming Kang Daniel by posting a video titled “The Promiscuous Private Life of the Nation’s Idol-Actor Boyfriend” in 2022, which contained unverified information.
In addition, the YouTuber lost a lawsuit against Jang Wonyoung of the K-pop girl group, IVEfor its circulation of misleading news. “The [demanda] The singer’s own confession was not answered by the other party, so the case was won through a presumed confession,” her agency Starship Entertainment said.
According to the newspaper Law TimesOn December 21, 2023, the Seoul Central District Court ruled in favor of the artist and ordered her to pay Jang 100 million won (about $75,000) in damages. Following the trial, it was reported that Sojang was seen running away while disguised as a wig.
