This Monday, November 6, eight BTS insurance students received a diploma for their solidarity action.
They worked voluntarily for a year and gave a donation of 1,250 euros to the Gard Cancer League (read box)! This Monday, in the presence of Ricardo Domingues, director of this association, eight BTS insurance students received a symbolic diploma from the hands of Damien Delavelle, their economics and management professor who supported them on their mini-business project, for congratulate them for their commitment.
“It’s a big undertaking to create mini-companies,” says Christophe Morlat, the principal of the Camus high school… but it’s worth the effort.
Fictitious company, real marketing
It is the Entreprendre pour savoir Occitanie (EPA) association which helps students (and their teachers) to create these mini-companies. “Our mission is to develop the entrepreneurial spirit, from 13 to 25 years old, from middle school to post-baccalaureate,” explains Kimberley Jacqueline, project manager at EPA which carries out 170 projects each year across the region.
The principle: create a small, fictitious and ephemeral company with management, service managers and together carry out a project completely, from its creation to its marketing. Real for once!
“Citizen engagement”
“Every year, we sell Jeff de Bruges chocolates and we donate the profits to associations, explains Damien Delavelle. This year, it is the first time that the students have created decorative resin objects themselves, sold within the high school but also at the Jean-Jaurès market and at the Auchan trade fair”.
“Do you know what your money is going to be used for?”
€1,250 a drop in the bucket in the annual budget of around €800,000 of the League Against Cancer? “For us, it’s enormous,” smiles Ricardo Domingues, its director. “With this sum, we will support three patients for a year, with two activities per week.” He took the opportunity to recall all the actions of the association which helps around 700 people each year with supportive care, legal and psychological assistance, finances research (€100,000 last year), mobilizes public authorities and increases preventive actions.
The opportunity to remind young people that 40% of cancers are preventable, if we pay attention to tobacco, alcohol, junk food and do not forget about sport and screenings. While the students mobilized voluntarily, he emphasizes the essential role of the League’s 114 volunteers. “We are present in 21 towns in Gard, and soon in Beaucaire.”
For the teacher, this type of active and caring pedagogy is a real plus for students who gain maturity and confidence. “Mini-companies must pay at least 20% of what they earn and can keep the rest for an outing, for example. Camus’ students have chosen to pay the entire amount to the League Against Cancer,” underlines Kimberley Jacqueline.
“A courageous choice for these young people,” smiles Ricardo Domingues, the director of the League. “When we raise funds against cancer, it forces us to ask questions and have answers which can be difficult…” This year, students are mobilizing for the Restos du coeur.
