BTS Confirmed To Leave Columbia Records For Universal Music Group

It’s official: BTS signed a new agreement with Universal Music Group for distribution and marketing within the United States and other regions.

Earlier this week, it was reported that BTS would be leaving Sony Music’s Columbia Records after a three-year partnership (the group first signed with Sony Music for distribution in the United States in 2018) to work with Universal Music Group.

On October 22 local time, HYBE officially confirmed in a statement to the Wall Street Journal that BTS was parting ways with Columbia Records and had signed a new distribution and marketing agreement with Universal Music Group.

“While we greatly appreciate our time with Sony and will always be grateful for all they have done and will continue to do, we look forward to our new chapter in partnership with Universal,” HYBE told the Wall Street Journal.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed and neither Universal Music Group nor Columbia Records chose to comment on the article.

Prior to this new agreement, Universal Music Group was already in charge of distributing BTS’s Japanese releases (through Universal Music Japan), and earlier this year, HYBE (then Big Hit Entertainment) and Universal announced a strategic partnership that would include debuting a new boy group.
