BSP Leader Kornelia Ninova’s Coalition Plans and PES Response

The Party of European Socialists (PES) is ready with measures against its Bulgarian member BSP, after its leader Kornelia Ninova announced her intention to form a broad coalition with pro-Russian nationalist parties. This Euractiv reportsciting PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck.

On the sidelines of the parliament, Ninova said that it was the first time she heard that the European socialists were preparing measures for her party, and added that the PES had made a remark on the centenary more than once. However, the social leader was visibly indignant at the claim that her people were uniting with nationalists. And he added that “Vazrazhdane” and “Ataka” were not invited for talks because they are nationalists. “I see tension against what we’re doing. It’s excited a lot of people, obviously it’s a successful formula and someone’s scared of it,” said Ninova.

When asked why VMRO was invited to join the new political project, Ninova answered that it was because of their successful cooperation during the local elections. And he stated that when VMRO worked with GERB (VMRO participated in the United Patriots coalition, along with NFSB and Ataka, which was a partner in Borisov’s third government, note), they were perceived as Euro-Atlanticists, and when they work with BSP – they are nationalists.

THE NEW LEFT PATRIOTIC BLOCK

At the beginning of the week, Ninova invited to talks representatives of 16 different parties, together with whom the BSP managed to elect mayors and municipal councilors. “These are parties from the left spectrum, the center and patriotic organizations. Before the elections, we set ourselves a goal – together to change the current model of governance of GERB, and we achieved good results,” announced Ninova. She explained that she and her partners plan to build on this success to hold a conversation about the formation of “one big front – left-center-patriotic,” as she put it.

It is said that among these 16 formations are the anti-European pro-Russian party Ataka, as well as the Russophile formation of Nikolay Malinov, who is on trial for Russian espionage. Today, Ninova denied that “Ataka” had participated in the talks.

“If the leadership of the Bulgarian party goes down the road, described in the reportthen surely the European Socialist Party will take follow-up measures, as happened in other cases, such as in Slovakia,” says Filibek.

In early October, the PES suspended the membership of both the pro-Russian Smer party of Robert Fico and Peter Pellegrini’s Hlas, who formed a coalition government after their “right” turn.

BSP leader Kornelia Ninova recently stated that she is against the PES’s insistence on implementing the Istanbul Convention on the recognition of a third gender unrelated to biological sex. “We do not approve of the PES announcing sanctions against Russia for providing arms to Ukraine,” Ninova added, while expressing her admiration for Fico and his patriotic turn.

BSP leader Kornelia Ninova is trying to replicate her coalition scheme from the local elections with the idea that it will bring success to her party in the next votes.
