BSP Leader Cornelia Ninova Criticizes President Radev and Constitution Changes in Interview with Nova TV

If I had the opportunity to turn back time, I would not have nominated Radev, said Cornelia Ninova to Nova TV. According to her, the president changes his positions depending on who he is talking to. In addition, according to her, there are reasons to think about how to “concrete” the powers of caretaker governments, but the current changes in the Constitution do not solve the problems.

The BSP has already declared itself firmly against all the adopted changes.

“The Constitutional Court will say whether there are unconstitutional texts. But out of nearly 50 negative opinions from all legal levels – lawyers, judges, prosecutors, NGOs, citizens, there are expressed doubts about the unconstitutionality of some of the texts. Yes, we categorically opposed all texts. We have our arguments. We must unite with the other opposition groups, because none of us has enough votes to appeal to the Constitutional Court, we are ready for that,” Ninova said.

Among the BSP’s criticisms are dual citizenship. “We strongly believe that allowing dual citizenship is a risk to national security and a betrayal of sovereignty. Imagine that a refugee with a 3-year permanent residence permit in Bulgaria applies and is elected as a deputy or minister – this allows this change in the Constitution. This person, without being investigated, gets access to classified information. There may be some infiltrated, terrorist nuts in the refugee groups. This person becomes a representative of the people, becomes the minister of defense and has access to the highest level of secret information, participates in the CSNS. This poses a risk to national security,” said the leader of the left.

It was on the issue of the possibility of people with dual citizenship becoming deputies that Ninova made serious criticisms of the president.

“He hasn’t changed his mind. He simply has two opinions on the important issues, depending on where and to whom he speaks. I can give you examples. At the Munich 2022 NATO summit. There, it was decided that Russia is the biggest threat to Europe, that it is a terrorist state, so an additional 20 billion should be allocated. He agreed. In Bulgaria he said that Crimea is Russian. In Bulgaria – one thing, in front of the partners – another”, commented Ninova.

She also commented that it was Radev’s official government that enabled the removal of the Monument to the Soviet Army.

“There is a lot of debate about who initiated the dismantling of the monument and how it went. The official office of Rumen Radev is starting this procedure”, Ninova said and showed a document. “Here is the document from the Ministry of Culture dated March 30, 2023, from the official office, which gives an opinion. It reads: The monument to the Soviet Army is not an element of Immovable cultural assets, does not have the status of a military monument and is not a cultural asset in the sense of the law,” Ninova read.

According to her, the collected signatures for a referendum to keep March 3 as a national holiday will be used to create a new party.

Asked if she regretted nominating Rumen Radev for president, she said: “I wouldn’t do it again. Especially the first mandate, he owes it to me personally, as raising the candidacy”, Ninova said.

“It is not bad to make new parties. But that’s not the job of a president. If he wants a party, he should leave the presidency, head it, compete,” continued Ninova.

She also criticized the budget. According to her, “money is pouring in”, but there are no changes.

Ninova’s assessment for the first 6 months of the cabinet is “weak”. “The goals they set for themselves are not being met. The Recovery and Resilience Plan, Eurozone, Schengen. Come on, for Schengen we have good semi-news, let’s hope it happens. I’m talking about the goals they set for the Netherlands. But Austria remains. And it remains that they accept us fully, and not just by air. There are still many unknowns. So the assessment is weak, unsatisfactory”, Ninova said.
