Bryce Dallas Howard recently spoke with Vanity Fair about how she became such an icon as star wars director. As the daughter of legendary director Ron Howard, it’s no surprise it all started with a little inspiration from dear old dad. His role as director for 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story was just the catalyst she needed. “I had just finished Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom“, she said, referring to her role as an actress in the film. “We were filming in Pinewood [Studios], which is the same place where my father was. And I went up to him and said, ‘Please can I follow you Solo? I feel incredibly lucky and privileged for all the access I’ve had in my life, but now I’m asking for more. Please, please, please can I follow you solo? ‘”

It quickly kicked off, with superiors taking note of Bryce Dallas Howard’s already impressive directing career by then as well as his passion for star wars. It all culminated in a call with Jon Favreau in 2018, who happened to be working on The Mandalorian at the time. They shared their love of the franchise before Favreau dropped a bombshell. Howard detailed, “and then he said, ‘I’ve written a series, and I’d like you to take a look at it. You can come in and I’ll show you all the artwork and stuff, and we can talk about it and see if you’re interested. And so I read the pilot, and when it got to Baby Yoda, I was like, what am I reading?!”

From that point on, it’s easy to see how quickly Bryce Dallas Howard’s directing talents got her back in the director’s chair during star wars projects. After directing a well-received episode in Season 1 of The Mandalorianshe returned for the Season 2 episode “The Heiress” and effectively solidified her status as a true member of the star wars family. It probably didn’t hurt that this final episode also included Katee Sackhoff’s live-action debut as Bo-Katan Kryze.

Now with even more star wars works to his credit, including a handful of almost universally lauded episodes of Boba Fett’s BookHoward has established herself as a true powerhouse in the star wars franchise. Fans even pushed to see her direct her own movie. Either way, Howard’s talent and passion are certainly worth watching.
