Just last week, the media speculated whether Sandra Bullock’s relationship with her husband Bryan Randall was in a deep crisis, and according to some, the couple was even heading for a breakup. The unexpectedly announced death of Randall revealed an unknown fact, namely that he had been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS for short) for three years.
This progressive disease is referred to as fatal. It causes degeneration and loss of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, with gradual weakness and subsequent atrophy. The patient remains paralyzed, but his psychic and mental faculties are intact, so he is at the same time fully conscious.
Randall was fully aware of the difficulties associated with his illness, which is why he asked his family, including his longtime partner, to keep this information completely confidential. Bullock therefore decided, despite the demand on her person, to take a break from filming movies and devote herself to a friend who needed her. He passed away over the weekend, he was 57 years old.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that Bryan Randall passed away peacefully on August 5th after a three-year battle with ALS,” the family said in a statement. “Bryan chose to keep his ordeal private and we who cared for him did everything we could to honor his request. We are extremely grateful to the doctors who helped us and the wonderful nurses who became our roommates and often sacrificed their families to be with ours.”
The pair met in 2015 at the birthday party of the actress’ son Louis and appeared in public only sporadically. They preferred privacy, and not just during Randall’s illness.
Although they weren’t officially married, Bullock made no secret of the fact that she was just as loyal to Randall, whom she considered the “love of her life,” as if she were his wife. “I don’t want to say, ‘do as I do,’ but you know, I don’t need a piece of paper to be a devoted partner and mother. I don’t need to be told to be present in the hardest times, I don’t need to be told to weather the storm with a good man.”
