Laos shaken by events rape and murder. The public was shocked when police confirmed that a 44-year-old man had brutally raped a 75-year-old grandmother before killing her in Viengxay district, Houaphanh Province.
The attack occurred at around 9pm on September 29 when the perpetrator, Bangphone, forcibly entered 75-year-old Somchay’s home. Neither of them had a last name, according to a Houaphanh Public Safety official. The last name is not common in rural areas, the officer explained.
Reported The StarSaturday (7/10/2023), Laos media, Laotian Times reported that when the victim showed resistance to the perpetrator’s attempts to have sexual relations with her, Bangphone used a more violent approach. He attacked the grandmother with a machete and caused fatal injuries to her legs, face and neck, which ultimately took her life.
Houaphanh Public Security officers then found the perpetrator lying in a pool of blood in the victim’s house, next to his body. The man was immediately arrested.
During interrogation at Houaphanh police station, the perpetrator confessed to the crime. She then told police about her extramarital affair with Somchay, according to her confession.
On the night of the incident, the man was out drinking with friends before harboring intentions to sleep with the victim, the interrogation report said.
Authorities are currently gathering information and evidence to bring a criminal case against Bangphone to court.
