A 46-year-old woman was beaten to death by the man with whom she lived as a family in Sofia. Another relative told about another victim of domestic violence in Bulgaria. The murder was not reported in the official bulletin of the Ministry of Interior.
Maria Kokilkova was found dead in an apartment in the capital’s Benkovski district in the early hours of April 8. After the signal was given on 112, police and ambulance teams were sent to the scene. The woman’s body was transported for an autopsy to Forensic Medicine, where forensic doctors found numerous signs of violence throughout the body, including a traumatic brain injury.
According to the daughter of the murdered woman, Maria was beaten to death with fists and kicks.
“I want our tragedy to reach more people and this story to save at least one soul and save the suffering of other people,” the brother of the murdered Maria – Angel Kokilkov – told Dir.bg.
After an inquiry by the Ministry of Interior, they confirmed the case and added that the investigation is being conducted by the Second Regional Police Department in Sofia, and the prosecutor’s office has also been notified. The man with whom the victim lived on a family basis was initially detained for 24 hours.
According to unofficial information, after the initial forensic examination came out, the pre-trial proceedings were changed to murder, the detainee was charged and arrested for 72 hours.
Maria’s brother also said that throughout her relationship she was a victim of systematic physical harassment. In two of the beatings, the woman had fractured arms, but never wanted to file a complaint against her abuser, who blamed her.
According to the Animus Foundation, in 2020, 25 women were killed by their current or former partners.
Domestic violence and its neglect as a problem is also the reason for Angel to make his personal tragedy public.
“Society must be active, because everyone is silent and there are murders,” the young man said.
