Brussels wants to postpone tariffs on British electric vehicles – Diario Progresista

The European Commission has proposed postponing the entry into force of tariffs on electric vehicles from the United Kingdom.

Specifically, Brussels asks to delay them for another three years, until December 31, 2026. It maintains that, with this, time will be given to boost production in the EU of batteries and other components. In this way, dependence on third parties, such as China, is avoided.

Thus, the Community Executive assumes the request of the car manufacturers of the European Union.

They asked Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, to postpone these tariffs on British electric vehicles after the Brexit.

They consider that it harms the production of this type of vehicles within the community bloc.

In the words of Vice President Maros Sefcovic at a press conference, “we have listened to those affected.”

“We have put a fair proposal on the table to ensure that the EU is part of a prosperous transition and boost the battery industry,” he explained.

Valdis Dombrovskis, economic vice president of the European Commission, has also expressed himself along these lines.

According to him, this extension “offers the predictability and stability that EU car and battery manufacturers so desperately need.” Precisely, he detailed, “at a time of strong global competitive pressure.”

Likewise, he noted that it is the “result of an intense commitment to the industry and the unions.”

Thus, the Community Executive proposes this postponement within the framework of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (CCA) between the EU and the United Kingdom. However, it does not affect the strictest rules of the pact.

Along with the extension, additional financing that Brussels reserved for this purpose from the EU innovation fund will be provided.

Specifically, a game of 3,000 million years in three years to boost the battery manufacturing industry in the community block.
