Brussels tunnels closed for a while on Thursday afternoon by trade…

Thursday evening there was again heavy traffic disruption on the Brussels inner ring and the Wetstraat area due to the actions of the police unions. Several Brussels tunnels have been closed for a while.

Due to actions by the unions at the police, several tunnels in Brussels were closed again on Thursday evening, just before the evening rush hour. “There is serious traffic nuisance on the inner ring road and in the wider area around Rue de la Loi,” Brussels Mobility reported on Twitter. In the meantime, the actions are over again, it sounds. According to the Brussels police, about 800 activists were involved.

Inge Paemen, the spokeswoman for Brussels Mobility, says that the unions first blocked the Kunst-Wet and Throne tunnel at 3.15 pm. The Wet and Tervuren tunnel followed a little later. Brussels Mobility therefore decided to close the Hallepoort tunnel itself, in order to ‘filter’ the traffic. In the meantime, the actions are said to have ended and all tunnels are open again.

The unions had left Kroonlaan in Ixelles, where consultations had taken place about a strike notice from the local police, and were reportedly on their way to Wetstraat, where they wanted to meet Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. But that wouldn’t have happened. A small group of activists is currently still walking to the police barracks in Etterbeek, causing disruption in the Hunting district.

The police unions are protesting with daily actions against the stalled wage negotiations and against the revision of the end-of-career scheme at the police. There is also dissatisfaction with a lack of resources.
