On Monday, a Tunisian who was staying illegally in Belgium shot dead two Swedish football fans and wounded a third in the center of Brussels.
The shooter was 45-year-old Tunisian immigrant Abdessalem Lasueds, the media reports. He was fatally shot by Belgian police during an operation on Tuesday.
Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre de Croix and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson paid tribute to the victims by laying wreaths, a Swedish football scarf and a shirt at the site of the attack.
Both Prime Ministers urged the EU to implement a more coordinated immigration return policy.
Increased attention has been paid to the issue, when the fact came to light that the shooter applied for asylum in Belgium in 2019, but it was rejected in 2020.
The authorities have tried to find him in order to pass on the demand to leave the country, but they have not been able to find him.
“The European Pact on Migration must stand up for better border control, but also for a better European return policy,” said de Cro.
“We need to be able to better protect our borders. We need to know who is in Sweden. Are they here legally or illegally? If they are not here legally, they have to leave the country. We need to protect our European borders,” Christerson said.
The Prime Ministers were joined by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. She indicated that Brussels wants to implement a stricter return policy.
