Brussels Shooting Incident: Belgium vs Sweden Euro 2024 Qualification Match Suspended

From Belgium vs Sweden in Euro 2024 Qualification stopped at halftime at 1-1. The shooting incident in Brussels sparked security concerns.

Belgium vs Sweden at King Baudouin, Brussels, Tuesday (17/10/2023) had been running until halftime when the suspension was made. The score at that time was equal at 1-1.

Sky Sports and BBC reported that shooting occurred in the Belgian capital before the match. The victims were two Swedes.

In his report, Sky Sports said initial news was that the two victims were wearing Swedish uniforms. After learning about this incident, the Swedish players told the officials that they did not want to continue competing in the second half and the Belgian national team agreed, as reported by the Swedish TV station TV6.

After the incident, Belgian police asked Swedish fans to stay in the stadium first for their safety. The perpetrator himself reportedly fled the scene and is still at large.

Belgian authorities consider this incident to be an act of terrorism.

“Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with both teams and local police authorities, that the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is cancelled. Further communication will be made in due course,” said UEFA’s announcement.
