About a year and a half later, after the hefty increase in fines (from 50 to 200 euros) for throwing a cigarette butt on the floor, MR councilor Geoffroy Coomans wanted a balance of the fight against those butts. That battle has become a priority for ships Jellab. The number of fines issued also increased.
But what’s the problem with a butt? The city of Brussels emphasizes that 30 percent of the litter in the streets of Brussels consists of cigarette butts. They give street sweepers extra work and are above all – with their 4,000 chemical components – harmful to the environment. The decomposition time of a butt is 10 to 15 years. If a cigarette butt ends up in the sewage system and eventually ends up in the sea, it can contaminate up to 500 liters of water.
