Abdesalem Lassoued, the attacker who opened fire with a Kalashnikov on Monday around 7pm in the center of Brussels, on Boulevard d’Ypres, has died. He was spotted this morning in Schaerbeek, after an all-night escape. A witness recognized him in a bar and alerted the police: during a firefight the man was injured. Taken to hospital, he died shortly after. During the search of his house, several weapons were found. The Belgian prime minister explained that the suspect was a 45-year-old “of Tunisian origin and was staying illegally” in the country. The man killed two people yesterday. The victims are Swedish citizens (perhaps fans who were supposed to attend the Belgium-Sweden match, first suspended and then cancelled). In the videos released online by some passers-by, the killer can be seen arriving on a scooter, dressed in an orange jacket, getting out of the vehicle and taking up the weapon. He allegedly shouted “Allah Akhbar”. He chased the two victims into the hall of a building, then returned to the street and shot at the cars. Finally, he left on a scooter, fleeing. The alleged attacker had also posted a video claiming responsibility on social media. “I have avenged the Muslims”, he said in the video, claiming to be “a mujahid of ISIS”. The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office does not exclude a correlation between the attack and the Israel-Hamas war. According to what we learn, the man arrived in Lampedusa in 2011 on board a small boat. “There is no indication that this man collaborated with anyone or that he is part of a network” of terrorists, said Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. The wife: “I never noticed anything or saw any sign” to worry about, “we were a couple like many others. I didn’t know where he was”, she said, referring to the moment of the attack.
