UA woman was intoxicated after inhaling the smoke from a fire in her apartment, rue de la Refome in Ixelles, Brussels firefighters reported on Saturday. The victim was transported to the hospital, while the fire, which had taken on a mattress because of a cigarette, was extinguished.
It was neighbors who contacted the emergency services after hearing a smoke detector go off, hence the importance, recall the firefighters, of this alert device. “When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they noticed a small fire on the first floor. It was a burning mattress. The occupant of the apartment was intoxicated by the smoke and taken to the hospital,” explained Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade.
