Bruno Lage: New Botafogo Coach Arrives in Brazil and Prepares for Official Presentation

Bruno Lage is on Brazilian soil. The new Botafogo coach landed at 5:20 am this Wednesday at Galeão Airport, which receives international flights in Rio de Janeiro.

Bruno left Portugal last Tuesday night, on a journey of approximately nine hours to Brazil. Upon arrival, he will carry out his appointments as the new commander of the Glorioso and will be officially presented this morning. Alongside John Textor, he will hold his first press conference at Estádio Nilton Santos, scheduled for 10:30 am.

The coach, along with the technical commission made up of technical assistants Luis Nascimento and Carlos Cachada, physical trainer Alexandre Silva and analysts Jhony Conceição and Diogo Camacho are yet to visit CT Lonier – their new workplace.

Bruno Lage was officially announced by Botafogo last Saturday. The 47-year-old coach was attracted by the Botafogo project, in addition to the financial part, which is similar to that of former coach Luís Castro. The new coach signs a contract until the end of the season because he does not know how he will adapt to Brazilian football.

Portuguese has always been John Textor’s preferred option since Castro left. The Portuguese has already worked with two athletes from the alvinegro squad: Marçal and Gabriel Pires.

With a long career in Benfica’s youth divisions, Bruno Lage left Portugal in 2012 to work at Al Ahli, in the United Arab Emirates. He was also an assistant at Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea before returning to Benfica in 2018, initially for the B team.

In January 2019, he took charge of a senior team for the first time, Benfica. In the first season, he won the Portuguese title. He left Benfica in June 2020, shortly before the end of the season – delayed by the pandemic.

In mid-2021, Bruno Lage arrived at Wolverhampton and had a good campaign in the Premier League, finishing in 10th place. He left the club in October 2022 and has been without a club since. Last month, he came to negotiate with Atlético-MG, but decided not to work in Brazil, which changed with the insistence of John Textor in recent days.
