Brunei’s Prince Abdul Mateen’s 10-Day Royal Wedding Celebrations with Commoner Princess

The royal wedding celebrations of Brunei’s prince and commoner princess lasted for 10 days

(AFP, Brunei’s capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, 11th) Brunei’s Prince Abdul Mateen, one of Asia’s golden bachelors, married a commoner princess today, and a 10-day celebration will be held across the country.

The 32-year-old Prince Martin and the 29-year-old Princess Yang Mulia Anisha Rosnah held an Islamic wedding in the magnificent mosque in Bandar Seri Begawang, the capital of Brunei Darussalam.

Prince Martin is the 10th son of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and is far behind in the line of succession. Sultan Hassanabakia is currently the world’s longest-serving monarch and was once the world’s richest man.

Prince Martin’s princess is the granddaughter of his father’s trusted advisor. It is reported that she owns a fashion brand and is also a partner in investing in the tourism industry.

Brunei’s royal wedding celebrations will reach their climax on the 14th, with a glittering ceremony at the 1,788-room royal palace and an elaborate parade in the streets.

The guest list is expected to include royal families and political leaders from other countries around the world.

“It was like a fairy tale,” 22-year-old university student Syahida Wafa Mohamed Shah told AFP near the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque where the grand wedding was held.

Many Bruneians plan to line up in the streets to watch the parade on the 14th, vying to see the glory of the new royal family in the royal carriage.

“It feels like a movie,” said 19-year-old Nazatul Izzati Saifulrizal.

Brunei accepted British rule in the 19th century and gained independence from Britain in 1984.

Brunei is an autocratic monarchy that follows strict Islamic law. It has a population of only about 450,000 and is one of the richest countries in the world.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Brunei’s per capita gross domestic product (GDP) is nearly US$36,000. With international oil prices fluctuating violently and oil reserves dwindling, analysts warn that Brunei faces serious challenges in diversifying its economy from oil dependence.

Although the Sultan of Brunei lost the title of the world’s richest man to a technology tycoon, his huge wealth is still beyond reach.

The Sultan of Brunei is said to have a large collection of luxury cars, and his riverside official residence is said to be one of the largest royal palaces in the world.

Although Prince Martin is unlikely to inherit the throne, his appearance like a movie idol has a large number of fans on social media, making him one of the most well-known members of the Brunei royal family.

Prince Martin serves as a helicopter pilot in the Brunei Air Force and is often compared with Britain’s Prince Harry by the media. He was once dubbed “the most handsome royal member” by the outside world.

Prince Martin graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and represented Brunei in the polo competition at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

In recent years, Prince Martin has played an increasingly important role in international diplomacy.

Prince Martin not only accompanied his father to attend the coronation ceremony of British King Charles III last year, but also attended the funeral of former British Queen Elizabeth II (Queen Elizabeth II) with his father in 2022. (Translator: Liu Shuqin/Verification: Chen Zhengyi)
