Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Brunei Darussalam currently experiencing a significant increase in Covid-19 cases. Even a record case, Monday (9/8/2021).
The country with a total population of 450 thousand people reported 42 new Covid-19 cases. This is the first record since 15 months that the country is ‘free’ of corona.
“One current outbreak is related to hotel quarantine centers,” said Health Minister Mohamad Isham Jaafar, quoted from Reuters.
Authorities said it was not yet clear the source of the increase. However, it is estimated that illegal crossings on the Brunei-Malaysian border are a source of infection
The samples themselves have been sent to Singapore. This is done to find out whether the circulating corona virus is the Delta variant.
The Delta variant is a strain that was first discovered in India and is more easily spread than the initial variant with more severe symptoms and attacks a younger group. This variant is now responsible for the world’s current average increase in Covid-19 cases.
Brunei began experiencing an increase in Covid-19 cases starting last Saturday. There are at least seven new cases found.
Quotes Worldometers, Brunei recorded there are 98 active cases at this time. In total cases since the pandemic broke out in the world, Brunei has only recorded 406 cases with three deaths.
Meanwhile, due to this increase in cases, the Brunei government has again implemented strict movement restrictions. Schools, mosques and non-essential businesses are closed.
Brunei is one of the countries that managed to control the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 until early 2021. As many as 33% of its citizens have been vaccinated.
