Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden Speaks Out on Decline of Live Music Opportunities in Great Britain

Bruce Dickinson, the frontman of heavy metal band Iron Maiden, thinks it’s terrible that more and more opportunities for bands to perform in Great Britain are disappearing. He said this in an interview with the Daily Express newspaper. The singer is also concerned about the fact that many pubs have to close their doors.

“Pubs have become soulless,” notes the rocker. According to him, the bars that are still there have become ‘drinking factories’ and no longer function as the center of a community. He is concerned about the rapid pace at which pubs are closing their doors.

Dickinson is most concerned about the disappearance of all kinds of places where musicians can perform. “This is how the entire music industry is destroyed.” According to the musician, artists currently rely on performances, but there are too few stages. “When a stage closes, nothing takes its place. When we started the band you could live off record sales. Concerts were therefore very cheap. Now that has changed due to streaming services and a ticket can easily cost £100.”

Because streaming services such as Spotify only pay artists moderately, they earn almost nothing anymore. Dickinson calls this the death knell for the music industry.
