Brown trout. WHO says outbreaks can be “controlled and stopped” and announces 120ME plan – RTP Notícias

“This new mpox outbreak can be controlled and stopped (…) A comprehensive and coordinated international response is needed,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday, in a session with Member States, which he asked to work in partnership with international organizations, civil society, researchers and manufacturers.

The WHO has estimated at around $135 million (120.5 million euros) the funding needed to deal with the “critical phase” of the outbreak over the next six months – an amount that ‘ could increase “due to growing needs” – and stop the disease, previously known as smallpox, “as soon as possible”.

The WHO official said that the global response plan to mpox and all measures implemented to stop the spread of the disease must respect the principles of “equity, global solidarity, community empowerment, human rights and coordination between departments”.

On August 14, the WHO declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency, with confirmed cases among children and adults in more than a dozen countries and a new twist in circulation.

The organization has drawn up a special plan that requires an initial amount of 15 million dollars (13.6 million euros) to support the search, preparation and response on the African continent, after having 1.45 million dollars (1 ,31 million euro) has already been provided from the WHO Emergency Contingency Fund.
