Brown: Even Max Can’t Win With a 15th Place Car

McLaren CEO Defends His Drivers Amidst Verstappen Domination

The season has been dominated by Max Verstappen’s dominance in the Red Bull, igniting the age-old debate of whether it’s the driver or the car that leads to success. Verstappen himself fueled this fire, claiming he could win championships in any car, including a McLaren or Ferrari. However, McLaren CEO Zak Brown believes it takes more than just a skilled driver to reach the pinnacle of Formula 1.

While acknowledging Verstappen’s talent, Brown highlights the importance of a fast car, stating, "Max showed what it means to be a good driver in a good car. When you have a good car and a not so good driver – Sergio Pérez is a very good racer, a race winner but, obviously, not at Max’s level – you can see the difference."

Speaking on the "Sports Industry" podcast, Brown added, "If Max was in a car he wasn’t supposed to win, he’d be able to get a bit more out of it because he’s that good." However, he emphasizes that car performance cannot be disregarded: "However, it is not true that a car capable of driving in fifteenth place will make it to victory. He can win with the third fastest car. You have to have a good car and a good driver."

McLaren, facing its own internal competition between drivers this season, presents a contrasting narrative to Red Bull’s seemingly imbalanced driver pairing. Brown defends the team’s situation, "[T]here are challenges, but I would rather have two drivers fighting for the win than one fighting for the win and the other fighting for Q3. We have two great pilots with a very good, transparent and fair relationship."

He remains optimistic about this dynamic: "I think we can have the desire to beat each other because they are both team players. There are times, and this season has been, when it takes a lot of pressure, but that’s the fun."

Although Ferrari ultimately secured the Constructors’ Cup this season, McLaren boasts a highly regarded driver duo. Brown confidently asserts, "In Formula 1, you get a lot of fast drivers, but ours also keep it on the asphalt. They run hard and clean. They’re good lads, our supporters like them and the fans love them. As I have said many times, in my opinion we have the best driving pair in Formula 1."

Despite the ongoing debate, one thing is clear: the success of any Formula 1 team hinges on a delicate balance between a top-tier driver and a high-performing car.
