Two American boys had the fright of their lives late on Friday night. They suddenly had to take the wheel of a moving SUV on the highway after their father, who was driving the car, was shot.

The 29-year-old father was driving his two sons in a Toyota Sequoia on Interstate 10 in Houston just before 11 p.m. Friday, police spokesman John Cannon said. to CNN. When the man was shot out of the blue, the victim’s children (6 and 8 years old) then deftly steered the SUV off the highway into a parking lot at a shopping center.

One of the children then got out of the car to get help at a nearby restaurant. “Unfortunately, their father was later pronounced dead on the spot. Both boys were unharmed,” Cannon said.

The two boys told officers that they initially thought someone had thrown a rock at the car. However, when they saw their father slump in the driver’s seat, one of them grabbed the steering wheel.

Houston police search for the gunman and investigate the true cause of the deadly shooting. The police are also looking for a ‘white vehicle’, according to the spokesperson.

The authorities are calling on any witnesses to come forward. They will watch video from the cameras on the highway to “see if this drama was captured at all,” Cannon concluded.
