To honor Peter’s legacy, the work he did should become commonplace, Wouter believes. “I myself am not waiting for a statue of my brother, but I am waiting for a monument by Peter R. de Vries,” he told the talk show Humberto on Friday evening. “That must be a monument that we as a society reflect on. A kind of monument where you think back to something, but also look ahead.”
Wouter also asks the Amsterdam mayor to name a street after his brother, who was shot on July 6 and died of his injuries on July 15. “Throw out a naval hero and come up with a Peter R. de Vries street name.” If it’s up to Wouter, Peter’s children Royce and Kelly can choose the place.
In recent weeks, Wouter has been overloaded with messages and statements of support. “I would really like to thank everyone for all the support, warmth and compassion,” he said. “If 1 percent of the people are going to do what Peter calls for, I think it all has some use. Although it will never make up for the grief of Royce, Kelly and his grandchildren. It is really the worst for that.”
