Carrera’s arrest occurs at a time when the impeachment process against the Ecuadorian ruler is advancing in the National Assembly for alleged embezzlement of public funds.
President Lasso warned on Tuesday that if he does not get support within parliament to avoid impeachment, he will call what in the country is called “cross death”, which means the advancement of elections, both presidential and legislative.
For Lasso’s dismissal to succeed, at least 92 of the 137 deputies must vote in favor of declaring the president guilty.
