Ashley Heshmat (44) was arrested and charged on suspicion of killing his brother-in-law, the nurse Justin Bishop (48), in the home they shared in Albany, capital of New York.
Crystal Heshmat, the suspect’s sister and the victim’s estranged wife, said she called the Albany Police Department to request a welfare check around 8 p.m. Saturday, saying, “Justin could be hurt and Ash could have hurt him.”
Bishop had worked as a nurse for 23 years and was found dead Sunday morning at his home at 23 Rose Court.He had several cuts to the head and neckaccording to NBC News.
His wife hinted that If the police had listened to her, the tragedy would have been avoided, stood out Times Union. “My brother had a lot of problems and we were trying to help him,” Heshmat said, stating that he suffered from different physical illnesses and struggled with his mental health. “We had tried (to get him help).”
She had moved out of the house with her minor son to Pennsylvania, leaving her brother and her husband sharing the home in New York. “We were worried about our son’s safety. before Ash,” he said in reference to the man now arrested for homicide.
Crystal says the officer who conducted an initial welfare check Saturday night only spoke to her brother and not her ex-husband when he visited the home. She later pleaded for a more thorough search, but says she was told that wasn’t possible unless she herself, who lives five hours away in Pennsylvania, went in person to see police in Albany.
Heshmat described the frustrating interactions she, Bishop’s brother and a friend had over the weekend while They were trying to get the police to take their concerns more seriously. The three they made multiple calls between 8 and 11 pm on Saturday after Bishop missed appointments on Friday afternoon.
“The officer/officers did their due diligence and followed appropriate protocols when responding to this call,” Albany police spokeswoman Megan Craft said of the Saturday night welfare check.
Heshmat said on Tuesday that He hadn’t spoken to his brother since he was arrested. on Sunday. He was admitted to Albany Medical Center and is due back in court this Friday. All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
