Brother Galevi dies of heart attack after secret return to Bulgaria

Angel Hristov, who was one of the so-called brothers Galevi, died of a heart attack after secretly returning to Bulgaria, Nova TV and bTV report. It is assumed that he returned to Bulgaria a few days ago.

It is not yet clear how Angel Hristov managed to return to Bulgaria without being noticed by the Ministry of the Interior. The funeral of Angel Hristov, which was scheduled for Monday in Dupnitsa, has been suspended, BNT reported. The reason is that an investigation has been launched into how he managed to return to Bulgaria without being detained to serve a sentence.

According to BNT sources, there is no login data with his identity. It is possible that he used a foreign identity document.

The Galevis fled the country in 2012 shortly before receiving final sentences of 5 and 7 years in prison for racketeering and extortion. Angel Hristov and Plamen Galev were wanted by Interpol with a red notice, which expires in 2024.

According to unofficial information, he died in Galevi’s estate in Resilovo, which was confiscated by the court at the request of the anti-corruption commission a year ago.

In 2018, the then head of the “Search” sector in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Vaylo Dimitrova, explained that the police had information about the possible whereabouts of the so-called the Galevi brothers, who have been missing since 2012.

“They are outside the borders of the country. We have information about where they may be. This is all a matter of checks and communication with partner services. When we get to them, they are detained and removed from the search. We have information that is being verified. I can’t say when this information is from, because I risk revealing the informant,” explained Dimitrov.

Meanwhile, the main witness in the case against them – the taxi driver Plamen Milanov – died mysteriously.

The case of Angel Hristov, who returned to Bulgaria and even settled in his old mansion, which became subject to confiscation, raises the question of Bulgaria’s readiness to enter Schengen. The Bulgarian authorities have not managed to arrest anyone among the larger accused and suspects they are looking for. A few days ago, Petio Evroto had apparently received information about an impending arrest and managed to escape abroad with his child.
