In a letter published by the Vatican, Francis assured the 93-year-old retired pope of his “spiritual closeness in the moment of pain” and of prayer for his deceased older brother.
The Pope also wrote to Benedict XVI that he was praying for him, asking for “support of Christian hope and God’s tender consolation”.
In June, at the news of the deterioration of his brother’s health, living in the Vatican, Benedict XVI left Italy for the first time since his resignation in 2013 and urgently went to Regensburg. He spent five days with his brother.
