The basketball players from Brose Bamberg are getting better and faster. In the 88:74 (36:38) home success against Ratiopharm Ulm, they celebrated their fifth victory in a row in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening. With this they consolidated eighth place in the table and can still hope for a better position in the play-off race. The seventh-placed Swabians only have two points more than Brose coach Johan Roijakkers’ team, who, like the last time they won the Champions League over Casademont Saragossa, were very strong from the triple line. Although the Bamberg team did not score again 21 times from a distance, the 14 hits in 27 attempts resulted in a very good three-way quota of 52 percent.

In their 13th win of the season, the Upper Franconia were carried by Devon Hall, who scored 19 of his 25 points after the break, and Chase Fieler (19), who had his team back on two points after an eleven point deficit in the second quarter brought up. Michele Vitali only got hot in the last quarter. Here the Italian achieved all of his eleven points, three of which were three without fail. David Kravish (12) also scored double digits. The center had to pass against Zaragoza due to a patellar tendon irritation, but quickly found their way back to their old strength with seven rebounds and four assists.
Development player Tyler Larson, who made his comeback after a four-month injury break against Zaragoza, was also one of the conspicuous players. The American held back in the end (4 points), but gave seven assists, got nine rebounds and did not lose the ball in 29:53 minutes of play. His representative Bennet Hundt, who came from the bank this time, was much more negligent with the toy. Four of the ten Bamberg turnovers went to his account. Christian Sengfelder also had a weaker day. Bamberg’s strongest in form in the last few weeks had a lot of bad luck in the end and only got six points out of ten throws.
The Upper Franconians decided the game for themselves after the break. With 52:36 they clearly won the second half. “In the first half we didn’t find the energy. In the second we were more physical. We also have guys like Vitali and Hall who can easily score,” said Roijakkers.
Two threesomes from Lockhart
Both teams found it difficult to get into the game at the beginning. After five minutes, the Bambergers only had six points, the Ulm team only two. After two threesomes from Dominic Lokhart to 14: 7 (7th minute), the hosts seemed to be able to pick up a rhythm offensively, but this turned out to be just a flash in the pan. They made five ball losses and thus built up the opponent. The Swabians, who missed their first five attempts from the triple line, now improved from a distance. Thanks to three-pointers from Andi Obst (2) and Per Gnther, the Ulm team managed a 15: 2 run across the entire quarter, with which they took a 22:16 lead.

Things did not go smoothly for the Bambergers because they made the game too complicated. Even two breaks from Roijakkers initially did nothing. The guests increased their lead to eleven points (31:20) before Fieler took over the helm. The power forward scored twelve points in the last eight minutes of the first half. He led his team almost single-handedly to 36:38 until the break. The more aggressive team until then were the Ulm team, who secured seven offensive rebounds in the first half (Bamberg 5) and took the ball five times from the opponent (Bamberg 1 win / 8 losses).
Bamberg defend more aggressively
The balance of strength changed quickly after the break (36:38). “The Bamberg team pulled the momentum on their side with an 8-0 run,” stated Gstecoach Jaka Lakovic. The Upper Franconians now defended much more aggressively and also exerted more pressure on the opponent on the offensive, which showed an effect. Led by Hall and Fieler, the home side achieved a ten-point lead (55:45, 27th minute), which melted down to three points by the end of the third quarter.

The first five basket wins in the last section were all threesomes, but four of them were due to the Bambergers (two each from Hall and Vitali). The hosts set themselves apart at 72:60. Since the Ulm team could hardly prevent their opponent from scoring, the Bamberg team achieved an undisputed home win.
Jonaic Grttner Bacoul, who was back in the squad for the first time just eight weeks after his metacarpal fracture, but was not used, was also pleased about this. In the Bamberg line-up, which is now complete after the return of Larson and Grttner Bacoul, Shevon Thompson was missing. The Jamaican had to sit out due to the “6 + 6 rule”. On Tuesday (8.30 p.m.) in the Champions League game against ERA Nymburk, however, the center is allowed to participate, as seven foreign players are allowed in international competition.
Player of the game
Chase Fieler played only 58 seconds due to two early fouls in the first quarter, but turned up after his substitution in the second period and gave his team a boost. The power forward hit five of his six throws, three of which were threes. He also got two rebounds, blocked two throws and hit three free throws.
