Kereem Morgan, 23, was killed in a shooting spree on the same night that a vigil was held for a friend who had been shot nearby just the night before in Brooklyn, NY.
The family said Morgan was returning home after a ceremony on Wednesday the 31st. in memory of his friend Brandon Nichols (21) when a gunman opened fire around 6:30 pm near the corner of Utica Ave. and Union St. in Crown Heights.
Morgan He was shot several times in the chest and died a short time later at Kings County Hospital. The gunman, described as a tall man dressed in black, fled on foot toward nearby Lincoln Terrace/Arthur S. Somers Park, police sources said.
According to Morgan’s family, they went to pay their respects for Nichols, who had been shot to death the day before, in the early morning hours of January 30, in the basement of a building on President St. near Utica Ave. When the second homicide became known , police suspected they might be related.
“When he left here, he told me he would be back shortly,” said to Daily News Nichola Morgan, the victim’s aunt, who raised him as one of her own after his mother died 17 years ago.

Homicides in the city had decreased 20% this year until Sunday, January 28, with 24 victims compared to 30 in that same period in 2023. But at the end of last month three men were shot to death in a span of a few hours on the streets of Brooklyn.
Days earlier, a 36-year-old man died after being shot “by mistake” by his friend outside a Brooklyn smoke shop mid-morning. And on Sunday, January 14, Richard Henderson was fatally shot while intervening when he saw two other passengers arguing over playing music too loud at a Metro station in that same county.
