With his hands tied, Philip Meyers was taken out of the 68th Barracks on Monday.
The Brooklyn resident faces charges in connection with the murder of John Sarquiz.
“It is unfortunate, because both parties say, if he walks, he did it, perhaps consciously or not consciously, it is him. There are families that are suffering too,” said Alex Cortez.
Outside the warehouse, a memorial with lit candles and photos of the victim still stands at the intersection of 13th Avenue and 73rd Street where the attack occurred.
Meyers is accused of beating the victim and stealing money on March 29 at around 8 p.m.
Sarquiz died of his injuries a few days later.
Wendy Guinea works at a store not far from where the attack happened and found out about it from her co-workers.
“It is not far, it is close to us. So you worry about the things that happen, you feel insecure,” Wendy said.
Both the victim and the defendant live less than two blocks from this store.
Investigators say Meyers has many prior arrests.
“It is not good that a person is on the loose who can commit another crime, then for me it is good that they have been captured,” added Cortez.
Now people in this neighborhood are a little more relieved after the latest update on the case that is still under investigation.
“He no longer feels safe, he already feels as if there is justice. If there are laws that govern our lives, that is, they help us not to feel insecure,” added Wendy.
The victim’s family thanks the police today for their work. Meanwhile, the suspect has been charged with murder and robbery.
