Brooklyn Nurses and Mount Sinai Resident Physicians Vote to Go on Strike

Nurses at Brooklyn’s Presbyterian Methodist Hospital vote to go on strike.

This, after their employment contracts expired on April 30.

More than 12,000 nurses have been negotiating with the medical center for months.

They demand a new agreement that includes the hiring of more health personnel and that offers greater protections, both for them and for their patients.

If a tentative agreement is not reached soon, they will have to give 10 days notice before starting the work stoppage.

Meanwhile, Mount Sinai resident physicians who work at Elmhurst Hospital are preparing for a five-day strike starting this Monday, May 22.

The doctors unionized in the Committee of Interns and Residents go on a work stoppage demanding a salary increase.

The union has brought several unfair labor practice charges against Mount Sinai, including for delaying bargaining for a period of four months and refusing to provide information requested by this union.

Unionized doctors say they earn up to $7,000 less a year than their non-union counterparts who work at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.

They allege that they risked their lives at the epicenter of the pandemic when they were most needed.
