Brooklyn Museum Curator Matthew Yokobosky Honored with Knight in National Order of Merit by France

The Brooklyn Museum is widely renowned throughout the world, but now it is the turn of a museum curator to be showered with laurels. Matthew Yokobosky was named Knight in the National Order of Merit on January 18, 2024 during a ceremony organized at the Consulate General of France in New York.

The Brooklyn Museum can be proud of having a curator with the title of Knight in the National Order of Merit. Matthew Yokobosky received this award for “his brilliant work, which has contributed positively to the image of France in the United States.” explains the press release from the Consulate General of France in New York. Born across the Atlantic, he developed a great curiosity and then a passion for French culture during his studies.

French fashion as a trademark

Before becoming a curator at the Brooklyn Museum, Matthew Yokobosky began his career as an exhibition curator in 1986 at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Then, he has been working as a curator at the Brooklyn Museum since 1999. His track record includes around a hundred exhibitions, including several devoted to French fashion, which allows him to stand out: The Fashion World of Jean-Paul Gaultier ( 2013), the Pierre Cardin: Future Fashion exhibition (2019), the international Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum (2021), and the Thierry Mugler: Couturism exhibition (2022).

Through these successful exhibitions, Matthew Yokobosky “showed that France is a profoundly modern country and a source of inspiration.” says the press release. His medal was presented by Damien Laban, acting consul general of France in New York.
